You would like to register your mare with the Holsteiner Verband? You do not know exactly which formalities have to be fulfilled, when and how a inspection takes place? The Holsteiner Guide series provides answers to these and other questions about Holsteiner horse breeding.
If you want to actively breed with your three-year-old or older mare, she must be registered in the Holsteiner Verband's studbook and presented for evaluation. An established and proven way for registration are the open inspection sites in the respective breeding districts. At the mare inspection, the horses are presented in hand and in free running and receive scores for type, topline, forefoot, hindfoot, walk, trot and canter. Based on the bonit and certain pedigree requirements, the mares can receive a special award (premium). The mares are registered in the studbook for which they meet the necessary criteria. These criteria can be found in the statutes of the Holsteiner Verband.
When do the inspections take place?
Mare inspections in Schleswig-Holstein take place in May and June. For members in the extended breeding area, the mare inspection and the foal inspection and registration are offered together from mid-June to September. These dates and the corresponding registration form can be found here and in the March issue of PFERD+SPORT.
For mare inspection, we ask that you register your three-year-old or older mare for a inspection date using the registration form and present the mare at the inspectiom site. In order to set up a proper schedule, it is imperative that all mares be registered in writing for mare inspection.
The deadline for registration is March 21, 2023, by which time the registration must be received at the office in Kiel, otherwise the printing of the catalog will be delayed. If you have missed this registration deadline, your mare will not appear in the mare catalog.

Mare and Foal Inspection and Registration Sites in Germany and Abroad:
In Germany, the main registration tour usually takes place between mid-June and mid-July. An additional registration tour will be arranged between mid-August and October. The possibility to register foals and present them for selection for the foal auction at the same time is possible for all dates from 15.06. to 01.07.23.
The schedule is updated and, if necessary, extended on a monthly basis. Other inspection and registration sites outside Germany may be arranged as the need arises until late May. How do the inspection proceed?
The mare should be presented in the best possible condition and already registered. She will be measured, judged in freerunning, presented in hand and pre-trotted on the triangle track.
Which mares are allowed to participate in the Verband mare show?
For the Verband mare show on June 11, 2023 in Elmshorn, those mares will be selected - starting this year, in addition to the three-year-olds, also the four-year-olds for the first time - that meet the status of a stallion dam in the pedigree requirements and have excelled in the inspection with excellent boniting (52 and more points). Three and four year old mares from members of the extended breeding area that are to qualify for participation in the Verband mare show with state premium on June 11, 2023 must be presented on May 22 in Elmshorn. Please also indicate this on the registration form.

Alternatives to open inspection sites
However, if you are unable to travel to one of the dates, the Holsteiner Verband offers you two other options for registering your three-year-old or older mare: For a yard registration site, please register at the Kiel office no later than June 30 of each year. There the requests will be collected and a tour will be organized in the fall. You will receive a confirmation of your request for a yard registration at the end of August. The judging will be done by the experienced judges directly on site.
A digital registration of your mare is also possible without any problems. All you have to do is to record some video sequences of your horse and send them by e-mail or WeTransfer with the name and stall measurement of the mare after consultation with the association staff in the Kiel office. The registration of the mare based on the videos will be done by the breeding director Stephan Haarhoff. To complete the registration, please send the horse's passport by registered mail to the Kiel office. There the registration sticker with the recorded data will be attached to the horse's passport. You will then receive the passport back by cash on delivery or registered mail.
