You would like to register your mare with the Holsteiner Verband? You don't know exactly which formalities have to be fulfilled, when and how a registration takes place? The new Holsteiner Guide series provides answers to these and other questions about Holsteiner horse breeding.
If you want to actively breed with your three-year-old or older mare, she must be registered in the Holsteiner Verband's Studbook and presented for evaluation. At mare registration, the horses are presented in hand and in free running and receive scores for type, topline, forefoot, hindfoot, walk, trot and canter. Based on the scores and certain pedigree requirements, the mares can receive a special award (premium). The mares are registered in the studbook for which they fulfil the necessary criteria. These criteria can be found in the statutes of the Holsteiner Verband.
When do the registrations take place?
Mare registrations in Schleswig-Holstein take place in May. For members in the extended breeding area, the mare registration and the foal premium are offered together from mid-June to the end of August. These dates and the corresponding registration form can be found here. For the mare registration we ask you to register your three-year-old or older mare with the registration form for a registration date and to present the mare at the registration site. In order to set up a proper schedule, written registration of all mares for mare registration is absolutely necessary.
Applications will be accepted until April 8, 2022, by which time the registration must be available at the office in Kiel, otherwise the printing of the catalogue will be delayed. If you have missed this registration deadline, your mare will not appear in the mare catalogue. You can always register later using this registration form and present your mare at the registration venue of your choice.

How do the registrations work?
In this video you can see the exemplary procedure of a mare registration. The mare should be presented in the best possible condition and already registered. The mare will be measured, judged in free running, presented in hand and trotted on the triangular track.
Which mares are eligible to participate in the 2021 Association Mare Show?
For the Association Mare Show on the occasion of the Holsteiner Horse Days from 8 to 12 June 2022, those - exclusively three-year-old - mares will be selected that have excelled in the entry with excellent boniting and in the subsequent final ring of their event. Three-year old mares of members of the extended breeding area, which are to qualify for participation in the Association Mare Show with State Premium on June 12, 2022, must be presented on May 16, 2022 in Elmshorn. Please also indicate this on the entry form.
