#Holsteiner Heroines: Up to Date V, a high-performing broodmare

What makes an outstanding broodmare? Strong genetic influence and good fertility are certainly important qualities. Qualities that Up to Date V, one of our Holstein heroines, embodies. She is the dam of 14 foals, most of whom have made a name for themselves in sport and earned her 22 stars in the Holsteiner broodmare model.
Up to Date, a daughter of Quite Capitol, was born at Max Dethlefs’s stud in Wrohm in the Dithmarschen licensing district. For generations, he has nurtured Line 1193 – initially with sires from the Hell stud farm in Klein Offenseth. And so, in Up to Date’s descending pedigree, Quite Capitol is followed by the stallions Exorbitant xx, Cantus and Lord Calando.

Cabaliero by Clinton I

Her first foal, which attracted particular attention, was born in 2010. Up to Date was six years old at the time. The mating with Clinton I by Carolus produced Cabaliero, who was trained by Jana Wargers and her then partner Michael Cristofoletti (ITA) up to 1.50-metre level before moving to America. In 2012, Max Dethlefs finally bred his grey mare to Clarimo for the first time – a decision that was to pay off. Cheyenne and Cedric Diggory, in particular, proved themselves in top-level competition. Whilst Cheyenne enjoyed success in southern Germany with Sven Sieger in the saddle, put in impressive rounds at the Bundeschampionat and has been in breeding for around two years, her full brother – one year her junior – shone under the saddle of Franz Josef “Peppi” Dahlmann in three-star show jumping and now competes under the Mexican flag. “Up to Date’s foals were rarely awarded prizes,” recalls Max Delthlefs. “But despite that, many of them have made their mark in the sport.”

by Clarimo Today, the grey mare is owned by the vet Dr Horst Gehrke from Agethorst. He took her on when Max Dethlefs had to give up his breeding programme a few years ago for health reasons. “I liked her even as a foal. She is very noble, has excellent conformation, a strong character and a mind of her own. She was always sociable within the herd,” says Max Dethlefs, describing the Holstein heroine. And what made him choose Clarimo for her on several occasions? “I was – and still am – simply convinced by Clarimo. He’s got real potential and has sired an incredible number of good horses. And I thought he might simply be a good match for Up to Date.”
