Holsteiner mares play a key role in international horse breeding. It is no coincidence that they are considered the foundation of success—both literally and figuratively.
A central component of the breeding philosophy is the systematic recording of the mares’ own performance and that of their offspring. The proven star rating system for recognizing outstanding broodmares was fundamentally revised in 2025. The realignment takes into account, in particular, the increasing internationalization of the sport and places a stronger focus on athletic performance as well as the significance of the evaluation.
At the top of the list of active broodmares, Online IX by Quinar-Corofino (Paul Heinrich Paulsen, Sönnebüll) remains the undisputed leader with 53 stars; she was already honored as Holsteiner Mare of the Year in 2023. She exemplifies the importance of performance-oriented dam lines for international top-level sport and has had a lasting impact on the breeding program of the Petersen family from Sollwitt.
