Verband stallions in portrait: Uriko

In the beginning, Uriko was considered an insider tip amongst breeders. But these times are long gone, with the Holsteiner Verband (Elmshorn) owned stallion having produced show jumping offspring attracting attention at international level for some time now.

15-year-old Uriko is by Untouchable out of a Lavito-Corrado I dam from Holsteiner mare familiy 4172 and was licensed for breeding at Elmshorn in May 2011. He was approved to undergo licensing based on the breeding committee’s decision to accept the 30-day-test as positive performance test. He underwent stallion performance testing the very same year. The judges’ verdict confirmed the talents the stallion had been demonstrating before, with his canter graded 9.25 and his jumping ability 8.83. Overall, Uriko’s stallion testing based breeding value was 130.

The KWPN stallion totally embodies modern show jumping type. Standing 1.72m at withers, he complies with breeding stallion requirements. His face is expressive, his well-proportioned neck ties perfectly into the body. His back is excellently constructed and with a well-muscled connection to powerful hind quarters.
Uriko was first shown in competition by Thomas Konle. At eight-year-old Maximilian Gräfe was given the ride, with the combination boasting an impressive track record in competition, winning numerous jumping classes at S* level and finishing near the top in jumping classes through S**. Uriko continued his success story with Ebba Johansson with placings to S*** level in 2018. Now the bay’s total focus is on his breeding career.
But Uriko not only enjoyed success as a sport horse, first and foremost he has earned himself an excellent reputation as a sire. From his first crops, he has had state premium mares and licensed stallions, including Uno I, reserve champion of the 2017 stallion grading, and United Way, who is out of Derby winner Carassina (by Concerto II). A son of United Way again, Update, presented perfectly modern and athletic at the 2021 Holsteiner main grading. Speaking of athletic prowess: Uricas van de Kattevennen is ridden by Dutch championship contender Harrie Smolders. This Uriko-Cassini I son foaled at Otto Boje Schoof’s (Hedwigenkoog) comes from the famous mare family 1916 which has produced top horses like Chica’s Way (Janne-Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann/Katrin Eckermann), Carassina (Andre Thieme) same as the licensed stallions Conway I and II and Clearway. As yet, the ten-year-old licensed stallions has been successful in jumping classes through 1.50m level, for example in Prag (CZE), Leipzig (SUI) and Doha (QAT). And Uniquo (Günter Schüder, Bahrenfleth) is a promising Uriko-Cancara offspring in the stable of Jerome Guery, silver medallist of the Tokyo Olympics. As yet, the Belgian has shown the nine-year-old in classes to 1,50m. Another Uriko daughter is based at the stable of high flying Richard Vogel, Charisma HS (damsire: Cassito), “HS“ in this case standing for show jumping legend Hugo Simon, the owner of the chestnut mare, who became National Champion at five-year-old. This year, Charisma is eight-year-old and has already won international youngster jumping classes.  Uricas, Uniquo and Charisma are just three examples of young, up-and-coming show jumping Uriko offspring well on their way to top level sport. It will be exciting to follow their and their siblings’ future career.
