Genetic Rarities for the New Holsteiner Broodmare Programme

The Holsteiner Verband stallion keeping GmbH has come up with a special treat for breeders at the end of the year by launching the Holsteiner broodmare programme. This means that members can apply for frozen semen from exceptional stallions for mares with outstanding performance of their own or their relatives on unique conditions.

The programme includes breeding and sport icons such as Caletto I, Calypso II, Capitol I, For Pleasure, Contender, Darco, Carthago or Corrado I. An expert committee comprising Stephan Haarhoff, Dr. Thomas Nissen, Hans-Joachim Ahsbahs and Felix Flinzer will decide on the mares included into the programme. “We consider this project as a chance for both our members and the Holsteiner breed. Breeders are given the opportunity to use this valuable and rare semen, and at the same time this globally sought-after genes remain with the Holsteiner breeders”, Felix Flinzer and Stephan Haarhoff agree on the advantages.

This is how the programme works
In return the breeder undertakes to have the foal registered in Holstein and, in the event of a male foal, grants the stallion keeping GmbH and the marketing GmbH the right to purchase him at a price of € 10,000. If this right is not exercised, the breeder subsequently pays a € 1,000 stud fee and is free to dispose of the foal. If a female foal is born, a € 1,500 stud fee is payable, the filly must be entered into the Holsteiner stud book at the age of three and may be sold at five-year-old at the earliest – again with the right of first refusal given to the marketing GmbH.
