Young stallion licensing in December
The licensing of the colts is the breeding year’s major event. In Holstein, this event has been held at the Neumünster Holstenhalls for well above 30 years. This year, for the first time, the young stallion licensing will be held in December at the Verband facility in Elmshorn. At the Elmshorn licensing sites held in April and latest also in October, older stallions are admitted, as well.
In fall the registration period for the pre-selection of young stallions begins, the colts are presented for pre-selection to the stallion licensing held at Elmshorn in December. At least three members of the licensing committee judge the colts at the pre-selection and the licensing. In order to succeed at the stallion licensing, they have to convince the panel in terms of conformation, movement and jumping ability.
To register for the preselection of young stallions, a written application must be submitted to the Kiel Breeding Office.

Application for pre-selection of colts 2023
2.5-year-old Holsteiner colts must be registered by using the application form (see below).
Young stallions with a date of birth after 06/13/2021 cannot participate in the pre-selection due to animal welfare regulations.
Do not submit any registration papers/equine passports yet!
In case you wish to enter several colts, use a separate form for each horse (print copies or request additional forms from the Kiel office).
IMPORTANT: Your information will be used when compiling the stallion licensing catalogue later. The application form must be completed in full and submitted to the Holsteiner Verband Kiel office by 08 September 2023.
Colts are pre-selected from 30.10. - 02.11.2023 at Elmshorn. The stallion producers will be given the exact date when calling in to confirm the entry.
The application fee per colt is € 100 for Holsteiner Verband members and € 200 for non-members. Applications submitted after the due date incur a € 50 late fee per colt.

Same as last year, stallion producers are requested to call in to confirm their entry some days prior to the pre-selection. The stallion owners/producers will receive more detailed information and instructions after the closing date.
Please take care to observe this rule!
Pre-selection schedule:
- in-hand presentation (bridled) on hard surface
- presentation at liberty and free-jumping (indoor arena)
- After the pre-selection, the stallion producers will be sent a decision letter. Then the auction conditions have to be agreed upon, as well.
Please note that helmets are mandatory for the stallion demonstrators!

Einschätzung der Vererbung eines Hengstes
Zur Einschätzung der Vererbung eines Hengstes werden jährlich die Ergebnisse der aktuellen Zuchtwertschätzung veröffentlicht.
Zum Ende jedes Zuchtjahres erhält jeder Züchter die Zuchtwerte seiner Zuchtpferde (Hengste und Stuten) mit der Bestandsmeldung.
Der Zuchtwert gibt Auskunft über die genetische Veranlagung eines Pferdes, die nicht direkt an der beobachteten Leistung zu erkennen ist. Bei der Zuchtwertschätzung werden umweltbedingte Einflüsse wie zum Beispiel das Alter des Pferdes, die Qualität des Reiters und des Trainings von der genetischen Veranlagung getrennt. Die Genauigkeit der Zuchtwertschätzung gibt Auskunft über die Sicherheit des Zuchtwertes und wird prozentual angegeben.
