The two of them are a young combination destined to hit it big on the show jumping scene: Alexander Housen and Uricas van de Kattenvennen by Uriko-Cassini I.
The rider 17, the horse 7-year-old – one of the best young jumping riders in Belgium and one of the best young jumpers in the world. They have been competing together for about two years now. “I had already known Uricas before I got him into my stable and I have been fascinated by him from a very young age“, Alex Housen raves about his ride. Uricas had been bought from his breeder as a foal by Leon Spronken, who passed away much too early in March 2019, and had trusted young Housen with producing the Holsteiner stallion. At Lanaken, the show jumping scene has been given a very impressive demonstration that he has done so with great success; at the young horse World Jumping Championships some weeks ago, the Uricas – Alexander combination was among those commanding the greatest attention in the 7-year-old category, just missing out on the title due to an annoying knock-down, as they performed the fastest round in the jump-off, securing an excellent fifth place. Moreover, Uricas finished the World Championship as best Hosteiner. According to his rider, “he is just a fantastic horse, very easy to ride and always willing to please and get everything right. A dream of a stallion“.
From Dithmarschen dyke to Belgium
Uricas van de Kettenvennen was born at Otto Boje Schoof‘s (Hedwigenkoog). His second dam is no other than Chica’s Way by Caretino, well-known for her successes on the international show jumping circuit, first under the saddle of Janne-Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann and later with Katrin Eckermann.
His sire, twelve-year-old Uriko, has by now made quite a name for himself as a sire – even beyond Holstein. Carrying choice Holsteiner blood on the dam’s side through Lavito, Corrado, and Ronald, the Untouchable son has achieved a lot over the few years he has been part of the Holsteiner stallion stable: His very first crop yielded the champion stallion Unlimited; moreover, his offspring includes the newly crowned National Champion Charisma HS (Richard Vogel) as well as six stallion-graded sons and 36 registered broodmares – four of which have been awarded state premium status. At (international) youngster tours, Uriko offspring keep coming to the fore more and more, like for example Untouched (Christian Hess) or just Uricas vd Kattevennen, taking fifth position in the World Championship.
“Uricas has a super character and no problem at all with juggling sport and stud duties“, says Housen. Asked about the future, the 17-year-old young jumping rider doesn’t have to think twice: “I really do hope that Uricas is going to stay with me for a long time to come. Of course he has been attracting a lot of attention, at Lanaken and particularly with the international public. If he is to stay, we will be aiming for 5* competitions.”
